Please give your feedback in support of highly capable programs across Washington State.
There are no indicators listing highly capable programs and/or how Washington State School Districts are meeting the basic education needs of their high potential students. Go to this website http://www.sbe.wa.gov/edsystemhealth.php and share your thoughts by e-mailing sbe@k12.wa.us ------------------------------------------------------------------------- "States need to face some accountability, for the first time, for fully educating their high-performing students. Requiring that annual state education reports include rates of above-grade-level performance would be a good legislative start." "Why not ... encourage states to adopt policies and programs that would aid high-potential children? The same “embed gifted throughout” strategy should be pursued in advocacy campaigns conducted in the separate states (which will always be where the bulk of U.S. education policy is established). In addition to fanning fresh interest in better educating high-potential students, try to ensure that they are included in all existing programs and new initiatives at the state or local level to improve education." These two quotes come from Closing America's High-achievement Gap, pages 140 and 145. The survey set out in this SBE web site, on which the state board of education is seeking input, does not contain anything for highly capable students. It is about time it did. Why not complete the survey and let voices on behalf of highly capable be made known. The email about this survey asked that it be shared widely…. and the three questions leave plenty of room for comments on HCP accountability. http://www.sbe.wa.gov/edsystemhealth.php If you want a copy of the Closing paper it is available to download at http://www.philanthropyroundtable.org/file_uploads/High-Achievement_Interactive.pdf |
